Charlotte is a woman desperately fleeing from a controlling husband and dangerous underworld associates in Melbourne. In her attempt to disappear, she assumes a new identity and secures a job as an off-season caretaker in a deserted alpine resort, hoping to find solace in the desolation. However, her respite is short-lived and the serene landscape is transformed into a stage for a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Bergmoser skilfully weaves a web of suspense, keeping readers on the edge of their seats with each page turned and masterfully builds a sense of foreboding, making the reader question the motives of every character introduced. The feeling of isolation is brilliantly captured, with every escape route for Charlotte gradually closing,  intensifying the claustrophobic atmosphere.

The characters are well-developed, particularly Charlotte, whose resilience and determination make her a compelling protagonist. The mysterious man who enters her life
adds another layer of complexity, leaving readers guessing about his true identity and motives.

The supporting cast, though sparse, contribute effectively to the suspenseful ambiance.

“The Caretaker” is a gripping tale of survival, paranoia, and deception. The author’s vivid descriptions bring the eerie setting to life, creating a haunting backdrop for the unfolding drama. As the stakes rise and the threads of the narrative tighten, readers are left eagerly anticipating the final, chilling revelation.

A must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and suspenseful mysteries.

Gabriel’s books are available at Edgars Books and News, 55 Murphy Street and online at www.edgarsbooksandnews.com. au.
